Teach kids about Midway Atoll

Most kids programs are targeted at elementary school kids or high schoolers. There’s not that much out there for the middle school set. On June 5, the Pacific Aviation Museum, in partnership with NOAA and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is hosting Midway Youth Day, a free program for 6th-9th graders. Kids can learn about the battle that took place at the atoll, 1,300 miles from Oahu, and the preservation efforts happening there today. Registration is required. Call 445-9137 or email Education@PacificAviationMuseum.org.

Explore the ocean on land

June is national World Oceans Month. On June 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., two kids age 12 and under can get in free to Sea Life Park with a paying adult. The Keiki Sunday event will feature educational games and arts and crafts. Plus the first 100 kids to enter the park will receive a free plush dolphin. While you’re there, check out the new Aloha Naia show at the Dolphin Lagoon Theatre. For more information, call 259-2500 or visit sealifeparkhawaii.com.

Surf babies

While my kids have always been more of the digging in the sand, playing in the shorebreak type, I love to see the groms who grew up conquering in the big waves. There’s no better place to see them in action then the T&C Surf Grom Contest 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. June 2 and 3 at Queens Surf in Waikiki. Surfers 12 and under take to the waves. Even the littlest wave hunters have a shot in the Kokua Division that allows parental help. Visit www.events.tcsurf.com for more information or an entry form.

Make your own toys

Each month Home Depot hosts a free monthly workshop for kids on the first Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to noon. The kids are given a kit and mom and dad help them hammer, screw and paint a fun treat to take home. Last month it was a windmill planter complete with seeds to grow beans. June 2 it is a “Classic Car.” Register online now at homedepot.com/workshops.

STEM start to summer

Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor is hosting Flight Adventures 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 2 with hands-on aviation and STEM activities for kids. Event admission is $5, or free with Museum admission. Also that day will be the Biggest Little Airshow in Hawaii, a event where remote-control airplanes will be zipping overhead. Kids can test their piloting skills with help from the Paradise Flyers Remote Control Aircraft Club. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit PacificAviationMuseum.org/FlightAdventures.
